Rapa Nui Easter Island Workshop

About this workshop

One of the world-reknown and fascinating aspect of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are the Rongorongo tablets whose codes we have yet to decipher. In this presentation, we would like to use these tablets as a central approach to the history of this mysterious island. How they were made and passed around Rapa Nui allows us to rebuild some of the recent history of the region.

About the speaker

Nicolas Delaire has a PhD in Social Sciences, University of Chile (2019). Between 2005 and 2008, he studied Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Mangareva (Gambier) history and its first contact with Catholic missionaries. His current topic of interest is focused on contemporary Rapa Nui’s history, emphasising sovereignty and autonomy. He conceives the Pacific space as a vast field of interconnected knowledge that started long before European first contact.
