French Films to See at the 2025 NZIFF in Wellington
Calling all film lovers! The New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) is back in Wellington – and once again, French cinema is back on the big screen.
This year, we’re especially excited about two heartwarming French films on the programme: A Little Something Extra
(Un p'tit truc en plus) and Jim’s Story (Le Roman de Jim). Whether you're already a French film
enthusiast or simply curious, these are must-sees.
Little Something Extra (2024)
Directed by and starring French comedian Artus, this heartwarming comedy has become a box-office sensation in France.
The plot 👉 The film follows a father and son who, while on the run, find themselves hiding in a summer camp for young people with disabilities—leading to unexpected friendships and life lessons.
What begins as a cover-up quickly becomes a transformative experience. Surrounded by sincerity, kindness, and unexpected wisdom, they both begin to see life—and themselves—differently.
Full of humour, charm, and touching moments, the film shines thanks to its authentic casting, with many roles played by
actors with disabilities. It’s a joyful celebration of difference, inclusion, and second chances.

Jim’s Story (2024)
Jim's story is a poignant drama spanning several decades. What could have become a classic melodrama instead unfolds as a sensitive and deeply human exploration of fatherhood, love, and belonging. Set in the quiet landscapes of the Haut-Jura, the film captures the emotional complexity of becoming a parent - not by blood, but by choice.
The plot 👉 Aymeric runs into Florence, a former coworker, one evening in Saint-Claude in the Haut-Jura. She is six months pregnant and single. When she gives birth to Jim, Aymeric is there. They spend happy years together until Christophe, Jim’s biological father, shows up… It could be the start of a melodrama, it’s also the start of an odyssey into fatherhood.
